CHAPTER 10

Ben

“Why do we have a seventh keg?” I demand of Josie after recounting three times. Our brewery has always offered six brews, but there’s seven kegs lined up. My head isn’t exactly in the right place today. Not when I know Josie touched herself after I made my dirty confession. I know I crossed a line, but fuck it if I can help it right now. I can’t stand her being mad at me. It…does things to me.

“It’s an experiment,” she says without looking at me. Without breaking her concentration on the tent setup. She’s left no detail unattended in our booth. It’s both eye-catching and intelligent marketing for the brewery.

“What kind of experiment?”

She holds up her hands as if to cement her innocence. “Look, I’m just carrying out instructions from Wes.”

“Wes.”

“Well, he was supposed to be here this weekend instead of you.” She fixes the stacks of plastic sample cups for the third time. The booth is ready to go. In only a few minutes, the gates will open and a flood of people will move through the festival grounds. We’ll be so busy pouring samples that we won’t have time for anything else. Best to get this straightened out now.

“Just tell me what my idiot brother has been up to. Please.”

Josie turns and stares at me, the usual gentleness in her eyes missing. I hate how unsettled that makes me feel. “He’s not an idiot. He’s actually a genius.” She grabs a cup, fills it from the tap, and hands it to me. “If you don’t believe me, try it for yourself.”

“What’s this?”

“Wes’s new brew.”

“His what?”

Josie lets out an exasperated sigh, warning me the patience she rarely loses is fraying. “Just drink it already. It’s not poison.”

“Are you sure?” The playful tone sounds foreign leaving my lips, as does the hint of a smile that forms. I know I’m not imagining it by the way Josie reacts. Her subtle intrigue masked by shock. She might be mad at me, but I’ve discovered her weakness.

“If it was, your brothers wouldn’t blame me.”

Cautiously, I sip the amber liquid. But not because I’m afraid of what’s in it. If Wes has been secretly brewing a new type of beer behind my back, I want to make sure I find every criticism I can when I confront him. But to my utter surprise, the wheat concoction with a hint of pumpkin is…delicious.

“Good, right?” Josie asks as the gates open.

“Wes really made this?”

“Don’t feel bad. Aside from Avery, no one else knew. Not even Zac.”

“But you did.”

“Only because he planned to bring it here to test on the crowd. He knew you’d want customer feedback and data to support adding another brew. Since I was making all the arrangements—”

“He had to let you in on the secret.”

“No, he didn’t.” The first customers approach our booth. “But Wes knows I don’t like to be blindsided.”

Before I can say anything or even attempt to apologize again for the plane ride, Josie greets a young, happy couple.
